“Do You Hear the People Sing” – Les Misérables

Updated: Sep 3, 2020

Les Misérables has been one of my favorite musicals since it came out. Do You Hear the People Sing (also known as the People’s song) is one of the most recognizable songs in the show and is the battle cry of the people. The students use it to motivate the people to join the fight for justice. My favorite verse in the bible is Micah 6:8:

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly[a] with your God.

The prophet Micah tells us exactly what is required of us. To act justly – to be equal to all and oppress none; in all actions and dealings to be just and righteous. This requires action, not just thinking it’s a good thing.

To Love Mercy – to be kind, merciful and compassionate to all. So, while you are acting justly, you must also be merciful, compassionate and forgiving. You cannot have one without the other. And Micah does not say to be merciful. He says to love mercy. That takes it a step further.

To walk humbly with your God – keep up a constant fellowship with God. Humility before God is the key to acting justly and loving mercy. It is through the Holy Spirit that it is possible.

So today listen/sing Do You Hear the People Sing and think about our battle cry of Micah 6:8. If we all did this, imagine what the world would look like. And today keep this verse in your mind and in everything you do – act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.
