Get on Your Feet – On Your Feet!

Get on your feet

Get on your feet and make it happen

Get on your feet

Get on your feet and take some action.

On Your Feet is a jukebox musical about the life of Gloria and Emilio Estefan. If you are not familiar with Gloria Estefan’s life, she grew up in the Little Havana area of Miami where she met Emilio Estefan the lead singer of the Miami Latin Boys. He invited her to sing with them. At the time Gloria was studying psychology and extremely nervous to get on a large stage. Against the wishes of her mother, Gloria’s sister went with her to give her the moral support she needed to get on stage. Fast forward the story and Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine hit it big and are one of the top groups in the United States and around the world. On the road one-night Gloria and Emilio’s bus has an accident. Even though Gloria and her mother are estranged as she never approved of Gloria’s career or marriage to Emilio, she rushes to the hospital. Emilio and her mother bond while waiting to see if Gloria survives her surgery. Although she does, whether she walks again is unknown. However, through determination, love and support of Emilio and her mother and hard work she did get on her feet again.

James 5 says:

13Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

James tells us to pray if we are in trouble. Sing if we are happy. Call for help if we are sick. It does not say to sit and hope for the best. It says to do something – to get on your feet metaphorically speaking – even if that something is asking for help.

What are you feeling today? Struggling with today? Hoping for today? Today get on your feet and do something about it. If you are struggling, then pray and call a friend and ask for help. If you are sick let others take care of you for a while – and it is ok to ask them to. If you know someone who is struggling or sick – then be the one that helps. If God has put something on your heart to do or start but you have been reluctant to do so – today is the day that you start. As Christians we are not called to sit and hope for the best. We are called to take action; to care for each other. And remember asking for help is acting. So today “get on your feet and make it happen…get on your feet and take some action.”
