“Not for the Life of Me” – Thoroughly Modern Millie

Updated: Sep 4, 2020

I read a devotional the other day that said there are three responses to fear – fight, flight or freeze but as Christians we are called to move. I can definitely see those responses play out right now. Some are fighting whether it is at a statehouse or on social media they are fighting for what they believe is right. Some are fleeing – and let’s be honest we all are doing this a little. It’s the only way to stay sane, I think. So, if you do not flee to an island somewhere, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video will do the trick as they currently have all time high ratings. That’s where I am fleeing to. And then freeze – so paralyzed by fear or what may come that you do nothing. I like that we are called to move.

In Thoroughly Modern Millie, Millie goes to New York in the 1920’s away from her small town. She has a ticket to return home but rather than going she tears the ticket up and vows to take on NYC. I love Millie. Mille was the first show for which I was a costumer – an assistant to help the costumers. Through an unfortunate series of events I became the main costumer with zero experience in costumes. I remember thinking “how can I create 250 costumes with $1500?” But rather than worrying about it, I just did one at a time. If you do one, then the next one is easier. And dang they turned out pretty well.

But that’s not to say there weren’t bumps along the way as there is with anything. I know it’s not the same as what people are going through today but it doesn’t change that we just need to move, even a little at a time. Start with something small if you need to (a phone call, a prayer, a project) and then just keep going. John 14:27 says “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you…do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” So today let’s be like Millie and “clap your hands, just because; don’t you know that where I am ain’t where I was.” And add a Charleston in for fun.

John 14:27

Matthew 6:34

Isaiah 43:1
