“Oh, the Things You Can Think” – Seussical the Musical

Updated: Sep 3, 2020

“Oh, the things you can think” – Seussical the Musical. The story of how Seussical the Musical was made - in the words of my inner Seuss - is how you take something poppable, make it flopable, do some crops and drops and back to unstoppable. Seussical the Musical was written by a team that loved Dr. Seuss and wanted to take his story to Broadway; it was true to Dr. Seuss in terms of the script, music and story.

They were in the middle of previews when the producers got into legal trouble and a new team had to take on the show. They reworked the show quite a bit, added and took away some numbers and went to Broadway. It received horrible reviews and became one of the biggest flops of all time on Broadway losing over $11 million. It was shelved for a bit.

However, the original writers still believed in the show and took it back to its original form with the original numbers and original script. It is now one of the most performed shows in the US. The show we all know and love (the one currently available for copyrights) is like the original show and not at all like the show that was on Broadway. How hard it must have been to create something, have people say it is the biggest all-time flop and yet have the courage to keep it going. It’s about perseverance and a lesson for us.

Galatians 6:9 says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” So do not give up. Keep on the path and remember:

Galatians 6:9

James 1:12

2 Thessalonians 3:13
