Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me is the biggest lie we told ourselves as kids. Words can hurt. That’s why I love the song This Wall in My Head. This is so true. Someone says something to us they may not even remember, but we do. And we let it impact us in ways we shouldn’t. We may think we can’t do something because of it or we’re not good enough. Or whatever it is. But reality is that we did it to ourselves. We built the wall in our head and we are the ones who can climb over it. We put the bricks there one by one and we can take them away the same way. Rather than listening to what others say about you, remember who and whose you are.
Matthew 5:13-16 says:
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. Don’t ever let anyone tell you differently. So today pray to God and ask Him to show you how to let your light shine. Listen to This Wall in My Head and remember to put “hand over hand over brick…and keep climbing.”
