Waving Through A Window – Dear Evan Hansen

Waving Through A Window is sung towards the beginning of Dear Evan Hansen and tells the emotional story of how Evan doesn’t feel like he fits in anywhere. He is always on the outside looking in. He has learned to stay away from people before they can hurt him “Step out, step out of the sun if you keep getting burned.”

The interesting thing about this song is that when the songwriters were trying to figure out how to do the music for the show, this song set the sound for the rest of the show. This song was also the key to the sound of Evan as well as a building block for the show – such as “if you fall in a forest with nobody around, will you really even crash or even make a sound.” It put into motion the idea of Evan falling in the forest.

I think it’s fitting that this song sets the stage for writing the show. It shows you how hurt Evan is and how he protects himself now. This is a natural reaction to being hurt but can also be dangerous. Have we done that? Put barriers up so that we cut ourselves off from authentic relationships. Right now, with all of the COVID restrictions, quarantines, etc. it is very easy to go into one’s own world. But that is NOT where we are supposed to be. We were made for relationships with each other and with God. When the pharisees were upset because Jesus welcomed sinners, he told the parable of the lost sheep. God rejoices when we enter into relationship with Him. Relationships with God and each other are so important, it is why when asked what the most important commandment was, Jesus replied love your God. And likewise love each other. That is what we were made for. If you have barred yourself from the rest of the world, know that you are loved, precious and a child of God. Today stop waving through the window and call someone you haven’t talked to in a while. For those who are already inside, look out the window and see who is waving. Who do you need to call today?

The Parable of the Lost Sheep Luke 15

15 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
