Come From Away is about a small town, Gander, New Foundland, where 9000 passengers were sent on 9/11 when the US Airspace was closed. I love the musical because it is a true story of how a town came together and welcomed these people. When the writers began this project, they were struck with the resilience of the people of New Foundland despite the incredibly harsh conditions. The opening song depicts how difficult the area is yet how hospitable the people are. It is a tribute to their spirit.
I think during this time we can use this story as an inspiration. Despite what is happening everyday “we will still go on.” The bible says to put on the armor of God against powers seen and unseen. “Stand firm with the belt of truth…and the breastplate of righteousness.” That is what we can do today and every day. And know that if it gets hard for you, say a prayer and give one of us a call because a candle’s in the window and the kettle’s always on.
Philippians 4:13
Ephesians 6:10-14
Fun Fact: When Come From Away premiered in Gander, they had to stop the show part way through and beg the audience to not give every song a standing ovation.
